Great news for the sports lover of Manipur. Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh announced that Indian women footballer Bala Devi and Oinam Bembem Devi have been given promotions to the Inspector rank in the Police Department of Manipur, owing to their sporting achievements. This is a great start to promote soccer in India where only cricket seems to be given all the attention. This is a very good step taken by the BJP-led Biren’s Government to encourage sportspersons for their achievement in sports.
Know by the nicked name “Durga of Indian Football” all over the country, Oinam Bembem Devi is also an Arjuna Award winner of 2017. Bembem Devi received the prestigious Padma Shri Award in the year 2020. She was also honored by AIFF Women footballers of the year 2001 and 2013. During her career in the Indian team, she scored more than 50 goals in international matches.
Bala Devi is also the only women player from India who joined any overseas professional football club. She is currently playing for Rangers FC. Recently, her name was on the news headlines of various international media for scoring her first maiden goal for Rangers FC. Currently, she is the top goal scorer for the Indian national women’s team. During her primary stage of football, Oinam Bembem Devi was her idol of football and never fail to follow her very path of victory. Bala also has a prolific goal-scoring record at the domestic level with more than 100 goals in her name.
