THANG-TA

THANG-TA OF MANIPUR IN KHELO INDIA YOUTH GAMES 2021

It is indeed a proud moment and a piece of very good news for all the sports lovers of Manipur. The Sports Ministry has approved the inclusion of Thang-Ta in the upcoming Khelo India Youth Games 2021, scheduled to take place in Panchkula, Haryana.

Thang-Ta originates from the state of Manipur and the sword fighting form is used in both self-defense and sport. THANG-TA is a popular term for the ancient Manipuri Martial Art which is known as HUYEN LALLONG. This form of martial art has been an inseparable element from the history of Manipur and has been in practice by Meetei or Meitei since time immemorial to safeguard them from the enemy.

Thang-Ta has been included in the upcoming Khelo India Youth Games 2021 along with other three indigenous games namely Gatka, Kalaripayattu, and Mallakhamba.

While announcing the decision, Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju said, India has a rich heritage of indigenous sports and it is a preference for the Sports Ministry to preserve, promote, and popularise these games. He said, there is no better platform than the Khelo India Games where athletes of these games can compete.

I’m very happy to announce that 4 Indigenous Games have been added, along with Yogasana, to Khelo India Youth Games 2021, to be held in Panchkula, Haryana. India has a rich culture of indigenous games and it is our endeavor to preserve, promote and popularise these. @mlkhattar pic.twitter.com/w33JIU18Si
